A conversation with Violet Li about Taijiquan
Ten years ago, I interviewed Violet for Qialance. Violet Li is a long-time and very dedicated Taijiquan practitioner. Some of you may know her from her articles and her website Violet Li Tai Chi. I reconnected with her earlier this year through a call from the Immortal Sisters of the Tao Foundation.
This time Violet asked me for an interview, and we had a wonderful conversation. We touched on many points, from balance to the international Taijiquan community, from martial applications to music videos.

What we talked about
We started with my journey into Taijiquan: how I found it and how it stayed with me through very different phases of my life.
Then we got into all kinds of topics and stories:
- why I call my blog “Qialance”
- why I write my blog in English even though I am German
- how I apply Taijiquan learnings in everyday life
- why more people don’t try Taijiquan, even though most recognize it, and that it even appears in music videos and movies
- how Taijiquan is seen differently in the US and in Europe
- how young kids recognized Taijiquan when I practised in a park
Violet Li and I found out that we are both rather impatient people, and that Taijiquan keeps teaching us to slow down. I love these moments in a conversation, because they remind me how much we share across borders.
Whether you practise in Munich or somewhere in the US, the questions, the doubts and the little struggles are often the same. Knowing that makes my own practice feel a lot less lonely.

It was lovely to talk to Violet again after all these years. If you want to read more from her, have a look at her website Violet Li Tai Chi.
I truly enjoy having conversations with women in Taijiquan all over the world. It is fun to be part of an international community. Here on the blog, I have a huge collection of interviews with women in Tai Chi from all over the world.
And now I’m curious: did you recognize Taijiquan the first time you saw it? Let me know in the comments!
Happy Qi!
