Easy TCM Snack: Sweet Millet

Do you try to eat according to the rules of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the 5 elements cooking? Then you should try this easy to make TCM snack. (If you haven’t heard about 5 elements cooking yet, it basically means that all food can be associated with one element – Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water – and each meal should consist of all elements.)

Even if you do not do TCM or 5 elements meals, this Sweet Millet is a wonderful snack. Food is very important in TCM just as it is in many other cultures, too. Like Hippocrates said: “let your food be your medicine”. And why shouldn’t medicine be sweet?

TCM Snack: Sweet Millet

  • Millet
    TCM snack Sweet Millet
  • Coconut Flakes
  • Dried Apricot (cut into small pieces)
  • Cardamom
  • Vanilla (powder or fresh)
  • Rice Milk or Oat Milk
  • Almond Slices
  1. Cook millet together with coconut flakes and apricots.
  2. Add a bit of cardamom and vanilla.
  3. Pour rice milk or oat milk over the millet
  4. Add almond slices.
  5. Done! Enjoy!

The Sweet Millet tastes great straight out of the pot, but I also like to add fresh fruit or berries. Especially raspberries, blueberries or pear. And my kids and I like to eat this any time of the day, especially if it is still warm!

I have to admit that even though preparing this TCM snack is really easy, I like to make a bigger portion. So I can enjoy it the next day, too. And whenever I go to a Taijiquan or Qi Gong workshop on a weekend, this millet recipe is simple to prepare the day before and bring to the workshop!

Happy Qi!

P.S.: I found this recipe on Katharina Ziegelbauers blog, who is a TCM nutritionist from Vienna. If you happen to speak German, check out her other recipes and tipps!
